Hounds

Dogs are man’s best friend, after all. But can you say the same thing about hounds?

A hound is a type of dog that is often trained to assist hunters in tracking and chasing wild game. Some people tend to contrast hounds with gun dogs and retrievers. Unlike hounds, gun dogs are much more adept at pinpointing the exact location of their prey, while retrievers are trained to recover shot quarry.

There are three types of hound dogs.

A sight hound is a type of hound dog which relies on its speed to give chase and catch its prey. These hounds are capable of killing wild game by themselves.

A scent hound tracks its prey by following its scent. Scent hounds lack the speed of a sight hound. But they got great endurance to make up for it.

The third type of hound dog includes all other types of hounds that don’t fall in the two categories. These breeds are a lot more difficult to classify compared to your average blood hound. Some of these hound dogs even possess the qualities of both sight hound and scent hound.
