There are many different breeds of scent hounds out there, and blood hounds are considered the best there is. In law enforcement, blood hounds are sometimes used to track missing persons and escaped prisoners. They are also used as sniff dogs at airports to check for illegal substances coming in and out of the country. The bones of a blood hound are very think and very heavy, with powerful limbs and feet that are protected with tough pads. Its coat is hard and composed of pure fur with no admixture of hair. Most blood hounds weigh around 33 kg to 50 kg and grow to about 58 cm to 69 cm. The average lifespan is 6.75 years. A UK study showed that blood hounds are among the shortest-lived type of dog breed. The leading cause of death in blood hounds is gastric dilatation volvulus.
