Hunting Hounds
Hunting dogs are popular with people who enjoy hunting wild game. There are several different dog breeds that are suited to serve as hunting dogs, but hounds dogs are still considered to be the most talented in this area.
A hunting hound is any breed of hound dog trained to assist in hunting wild game. Hounds are best suited for this purpose. Fact is it’s as if they were born for this role. The three types of hound breeds should explain why.
The first major breed of hound dogs are the sight hounds. Sight hounds work through sight and by giving chase to its prey, of which the sight hound is confident thanks to its incredible speed and agility. Sight hounds are able to work and catch wild game independently from its owner.
Scent hounds use their amazing sense of smell to track prey over long distances. Scent hounds aren’t as fast as sight hounds.
The last type of hound breed is the lurcher. Lurchers are a cross between a sight hound and a working breed type of dog.
If you enjoy hunting wild game every now and then, you’d do well to adopt and train a hunting hound while it’s still a pup. Consult an experienced hunter or friend about which breed of hunting hound best suits your hunting style.
