Walker Hound
A walker hound is a type of hound dog. Its name, walker hound, is short for Treeing Walker Coonhound, which in turn describes the breed’s unique style of hunting. Despite its mild name, walker hounds actually live up to their name as coming from the hound dog family.
A walker hound is a descendant of the English foxhound and is a type of dog breed belonging to the hound family. The walker hound was first established as a separate breed in 1945.
Walker hounds are very fast and agile dogs, and tireless in the pursuit of their game. The name Treeing Walker Coonhound was actually derived from the dog’s ability to corner raccoons up a tree where the dog’s owner is free to shoot it down.
Walker hounds love to cuddle and make very active pets. Their bones are very strong especially around the shoulders, making them very fast runners. Most are short-haired, with legs that are lean and straight and not well-muscled. The average weight for a walker hound is 50 lbs to 70 lbs, and could grow up to 20 in. to 28 in. in length.
Walker hounds make great apartment pet. But be sure to take them out at least once a day to provide these dogs an outlet for their energy and intelligence.
